I am building a lightweight wood-framed structure using the existing octagonal stage as a base and covering it with a translucent material. The project would will be built in November, 2011 and stay in place until March 2012. It will be “folly” in the winter garden, as well as providing a functional interior space to extend the programming of Le Petit Versailles Garden into the winter. “Obscure Society” will be an evening of experimental music with dance, followed by short experiemntal films/videos. Artists invited have or have not worked together in the past, and will converge for an early autumn offering. At dark, projections will begin.

Sound artists include: Jon Vomit, Dan Drogynous, Hx Khltr.

Movement: Nathan Andary, Shizu Homma, and others.

Projections by Risha Gorig, Kevin Lovelady, Meli Sanfiorenzo, and Steve Staso.

The happening begins at 6:30 with a sound and movement installation and is open for all. Admission is by donation. All ages all beings.

Continuing in the tradition of the Invisible Film Series, the New Vision Cinema Series presents a broad range of film and videos from an equally-diverse selection of cineastes. Founded in 2000 by Jennifer MacMillan as the Invisible Film Series, the New Vision Cinema Series has endeavored to showcase the talents of some of the finest local (and sometimes, not-so- local) independent film and video talents of the Greater New York City area. Since its inception, the series has shown works of such notables as Stan Brakhage, Mike Kuchar, Nick Zedd, Jennifer Reeves, and Bradley Eros. With the departure of Ms. MacMillan from its fold (a hard act to follow), the series has been under the sole curatorship of its former co-curator, Michael Park.

The New Vision Cinema Series is a short film and video series focussing on all the various genres of short film, be they experimental, narrative, animation, documentary, or even music video, and any combination thereof. Each installment of the series runs from 90 minutes -2 hours, and will include an average of ten artists works each.

Alexis Pace is a NYC based artist and designer,her work often walks the thin line between the two disciplines. With a background in sculpture and education in Industrial Design (MiD from Pratt Institute Brooklyn, NY) her passion for manipulation of materials in evident in all avenues of her work.

Her background in Industrial Design has inspired her to mix different materials and mediums as the inspiration dictates. Sculpture, photography, mixed media, and popsicle sticks.
Her recent experiments have been treading the line between organic decay, destruction and manipulation.

Inspired by the book “When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies” by Jane R. Hirschmann and Carol H. Munter, this site-specific installation seeks to transform Petit Versailles into a Hanging Garden. Playing with how disembodied women’s bodies have become:dissected, rejected, mutated and recreated, this project seeks to turn the dismemberment on its head to empower both the subjects and the viewers."

Deeply romantic, in Italian, French, German and Portuguese, these songs draw the listener into the nocturnal realms, offering access to the deeper layers of the unconscious that we encounter only in dreams or flights of insanity. Vol de nuit (night flight) is a journey of the human spirit through the sky, illuminated by the stars and the moon.

NYC (Queens)-based filmmaker-poet Stephanie Gray has been making poetic super 8 films about cities since 1999 when she started filming the haunting poetry of Buffalo NY's decaying urban areas. Since moving to NYC in 2004, she has continued her exploration of the mysteries of a city and its rhythms, as well as vanishing neighborhood places, spaces and shops. This evening will feature super 8 films about NYC: some silent, some with Gray reading poetic text live. Specific locales of the films include the fading character of Hell's Kitchen and the East Village, as well films devoted to disappeared businesses, especially bakeries, such as Gertel's, Zito's, Jon Vie Pastries, Five Rose's Pizza and other portraits of the city. The evening will culminate in Gray's recent longer work You Know They Want to Disappear Hell's Kitchen As Clinton." Gray will project the films live from a super 8 projector.

MORE BREAD FOREVER (7 min, b/w, silent, 2004) The next to last day of Zito’s Bakery which closed in 2004 and as far as we know, the last we checked (or for a very long time) another business still hadn’t moved in to its space on Bleecker St.

Gertel’s galore .. lore .. ore (7 min, b/w, silent, 2007) One the last real Jewish bakeries on the Lower East Side succumbs to the unfriendly real estate market in NYC. Gray caught its next to last day. The bakery continues as a wholesaler/mail order in another borough. The sign next door for something hardware-like somehow made its way into this film. The interior of Gertel’s was dark and too crowded with people or memories to venture in. Instead, the filmmaker stayed outside to get one last memory. The building has been demolished. Gertel’s should’ve lived on. We’ll never see signs and storefronts like this again, that breathe and exhale the memories of the millions before us.

i bought the last 4 bagels at jon vie pastries (7 min, b/w+color, 2005) i did. before it closed. forever. sadly there wasn’t as much fanfare about this closure as there was about zito’s bakery closing a bit earlier in 2004. the silver
wallpaper was blinding, though.

Next to last day of Five Roses Pizza (7 min, silent, b/w 2009) I was sad about the fluorescent lights, sad about the lack of crowds, sad about the mother mary. I stared out gloomily to DeRoberti’s across the street eating my pizza.

Storefronts before other storefronts (7 min, silent, b/w, 2008) You’ll note some of these storefronts are alerted already and you get the feeling, you wonder, how much longer will they be here? The Launderette letters are gone.

hearts in new york (3 min, silent, color, 2006) Finding all the hearts in early Feb that I can for a valentine’s project, but instead, finding hearts that are up year-round. There’s plenty. At least one of these shops you see is gone.

After Doing My Taxes Around Here (3 min, silent, color, 2006) My all time favorite wall mural disappeared some time after I shot this. Was it your favorite, too? WHY? And if you take out one letter, it all relates subliminally to taxes.

governor’s island (7 min, silent, color, 2005) You wonder how much of what could now be called “old” Governor’s Island will stay up while it becomes a new spiffy art destination. What will we lose?

YOU KNOW THEY WANT TO DISAPPEAR HELL'S KITCHEN AS CLINTON (17 min, b/w + color, 2010, live sound) In mysterious insistent shots, Gray films an inspired letter of sorts to writer E.B. White, author of the midcentury infamous Here is New York essay. The sound is a mix of the filmmaker’s voiceover, bits of poetic prose prefaced by, and inspired by quotes from White. Interspersed are reverbed lines from a 60s surf song New York's a Lonely Town. She treats this letter as a film essay of old and disappearing Hell's Kitchen which developers have been trying to rename Clinton for years. Maybe that should be Hell's Clinton, or Clinton's Hell.

Benfield's shows center on his quirky pop melodies but are stretched by Garrin into improvisational explorations into new territory each night. Familiar songs are often twisted and contorted into gorgeous new creations that leave audiences breathless. At once organic and eclectic, Garrin's shows are an experience as much as they are a musical concert! Utilizing electronic effects and a loop station, audiences find themselves grooving to atmospheric rhythms and settling back into Benfield's soothing vocal style. When the whole band is cooking, Benfield seamlessly blends his compositional skills with his improvisational ones, making old songs seem new. His thought-provoking lyrics and orchestral arrangements are constantly refurbished but are never over-shadowed by the endless noodling characterized by many in the neighboring jam-Band genre.

This weekend features the World Premiere of: THE DREAM OF WILD PONIES DANCING (2011)

The Dream of Wild Ponies Dancing documents the wild ponies of the night in their natural habitat. In the quiet deep green of a sandy midnight forest, four wild ponies recognize each other as kin and develop a sense of connection and family. Half human, all beast, the ponies run free on a mystical adventure through the dunes, arriving to a deserted beach as gray dawn breaks. In 79 AD, Mt. Vesuvius erupted, burying the city of Pompeii. In 526 AD, a giant earthquake ripped apart Syria and Antioch. In 1556, an earthquake flattened the Shaanxi Province of China. In 1893, a cyclone sent water all the way up Manhattan to 14th Street. In 1962, a volcano erupted in Peru. In 2005, a storm surge drowned New Orleans. In 2011, one brave professor and her band of clowns will attempt to make sense of it all.

In this story love materializes itself through the most beautiful creature that had ever lived and the courtship that never did. Written six months into their transition, this story manifests into a tale about gaining confidence from a place so deep inside and in turn finding out that it never mattered because that place was already dead. Moved by theater and classic costuming, PTM takes you through this journey with Shakespearean style love poems that will melt your heart and gut wrenching songs that rip it apart. All to make you feel as they did… once upon a time… in a not so far and distant land.

Despite the taboo surrounding homosexuality, the topic was too intriguing to be left entirely out of the Yiddish picture. An exploration of lesbian & gay subtext in Yiddish cinema during its heyday, from the 1920's to the outbreak of World War II, reveals distinctly Jewish concerns of the time intertwined with a striking array of allusions to this highly-charged subject. From musical comedies such as YIDL MITN FIDL (Yidl With His Fiddle) and AMERIKANER SHADKHN (American Matchmaker) to classic dramas DER DIBUK (The Dybbuk) and DER VILNER SHTOT-KHAZN (Overture To Glory), queerness reached the screen in various guises, emerging as an alternate take on themes of conflicted identity, passing and same-sex attachments. Discussion of these and other gems of the Yiddish screen, as well as such features as RADIO DAYS, COLONEL REDL, CROSSFIRE, and GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT, will be accompanied by clips from selected films and period home movies.

While growing up in northern Italy, Fabrizio Brua studied piano at the Lorenzo Perosi Conservatory of Music. Never completely convinced by traditional western methods for studying and performing music, Brua began, at an early age, to follow his own musical path. Under the guidance of a Jesuit priest, Frate Cappelletto, Brua began a spiritual journey that lead him to India. There he discovered classical Indian music and the sitar. Classical Indian music, unlike classical western music, is based upon improvisation within musical structures. Such a system is well adapted to the temperament and conceptual models of Brua. Since 1991 he has studied classical Indian music under the tutelage of the Italian sitar master, Gianni Ricchizzi, in Assisi Italy; and in 1998 with Pandit Amarnath Mishra in Varanasi, India. Now, Brua, resides in Perugia, Italy and in Brooklyn, NY.

Garrin Benfield's sound has been described as Freestyle Acoustic Rock. His music is a blend of moody, guitar driven rock and polyrhythmic groove all run through the filter of a very serious Singer/Songwriter. His talent shines through as a solo artist when he flat-picks his way through complicated and lightning-fast arrangements and also while he uses a Loop Station to create mesmerizing soundscapes upon which he lays blistering rock, blues and jazz licks, darkened by his extensive use of effect pedals.

The Lazarus Rose

Chris Rael of longtime L.E.S. Indo-pop band Church of Betty returns to Le Petit Versailles with new acoustic ensemble The Lazarus Rose, performing ancient Spanish Sephardic songs with contemporary world music instrumentation. These songs are mostly in Ladino language (one in Hebrew). Rael will sing and play Indian sitar, guitarra Portugese, 12-string guitar and Turkish zas. He will be joined by Bulgarian singer Vlada Tomova, violinist Emi Simeonov, bassoonist Claire de Brunner and Church of Betty's Marlon Cherry on djembe. The group will also play several Church of Betty chestnuts, and may be joined by surprise special guests. Chris and LPV go way back and share history and community in the L.E.S.

“Surf Gang” is about the turf war that erupts when a gang of tough surfer girls travel out of their home territory of working class Rockaway Beach and arrive in the luxurious Hamptons. The Rockaway Ruffnecks, led by diminutive wildcat, Baby Rockaway, with their pirate flag flying and their rock n roll blaring, roll up into a world of ease and wealth made abrasive to outsiders. The local surfer girls call themselves the Ungratefuls, and are led by Blossom, an aging surfer girl who years ago reigned the seas, but who now lives in semi retirement and cocktail stupor in her gothic mansion overlooking the ocean. “Surf Gang” takes a satirical and sometimes slapstick view of class difference in a world of both natural beauty and fantastic embellishment.

“The film diary questions the relation between reality and illusion in art. For instance, some viewers understand The Dog Diary (1996) as literal documentation. But while it is based on video material gathered during several days over a six week period, the original recordings run over five hours, and the finished tape is just twenty two minutes. Alongside montage and several video ‘effects,’ it also features superimposed sounds and pictures. In its finished version, it has a closer approximation to memory than the original footage. The largely erotic relationship with Dog was based on sexual fantasy, and the tape works to convert some of these moments into reflections on identity, power and representation. “ – Tom Chomont

101010 Schedule announced!

We are delighted to announce the schedule of performances for the 101010 UpStage Festival!

The festival begins at 8pm NZ time on Sunday 10 October (find your local time here) and runs until 4.30pm NZ time on Monday 11 October. There is a break in the middle from 5.30-7.30am NZ time. Most shows will perform twice (some three times) during the festival, to give people in different time zones a chance to see everything.

Mary Gaitskill is the author of the novels “Two Girls, Fat and Thin” and “Veronica,” as well as the story collections “Bad Behavior” and “Because They Wanted To,” which was nominated for the PEN/Faulkner in 1998. Her stories and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, Granta, Best American Short Stories and The O. Henry Prize Stories. Her novel “Veronica” was nominated for the National Book Award in 2005. Her most recent book is the story collection titled “Don’t Cry.”

Shelley Marlow is the author of the novels Two Augusts in a Row in a Row and Lesbians of Arabia. Marlow is a visual artist, songwriter and author whose fiction, essays and artwork appear in the St. Petersburg Review, The Literary Review, LTTR, Zingmagazine, New Observations, and Girlfriends. Robert Marshall‘s novel, A Separate Reality, was released by Carroll & Graf in 2006 and was nominated for a Lambda Award for debut fiction. September 10 5- 7pm. Artist reception for Baroque Bike Rack by Bernard Klevickas

The baroque bike rack is fabricated from abandoned bicycle frames and parts. The design tweaks and repurposes what were damaged bikes into a supporting and securing structure. The sidewalks of New York City contain wounded and damaged bicycles from partial robberies and foulplay of bent rims. I feel for the cyclist who aproaches his or her locked bike only to notice that a wheel or seat or more is missing. In too many cases the bike is abandoned and more vandals take more parts and rust sets in.

Bernard Klevickas is a sculptor who utillizes industrial processes in an expressionist manner to create objects exploring the possibilities of surface, form and function. As an aspiring artist developing his own sculpture for over 22 years Bernard has in the past also fabricated sculpture for the artists Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois, Frank Stella, and others. He has a manufacturing certificate in CNC (computer numerical control) machining and manual lathe and mill operation and a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His sculpture has won many awards and has been shown indoor and outdoor in numerous exhibitions in New York City, the Hudson Valley, Chicago, West Palm Beach Florida and in Indiana, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Istanbul Turkey and Bermuda. http://www.bernardklevickas.com -

- A Piece by The Movement Theatre Company

Earth, Air, Fire, Water are the fundamental elements that have built up and at times destroyed our civilizations. These components, and the relationships between them, have shaped human existence on the planet. How have we, humanity, evolved as the fifth element and altered the balance? As the world changes from our imprint, the forces of nature these elements control are competing to regain their place in the eco-system. How will these forces play out if not treated with respect? Recent examples like the earthquake in Haiti and Hurricane Katrina serve as reminders that Mother Earth is speaking. Are YOU listening?

Each artist will present an original piece based off of this years artistic statement and their particular element.

~Playwrights will not be allowed to use any paper from the creation-presentation of their play.
~Choreographer must find ways to include their element into the piece.
~Visual Artist must blend all five elements together into a visual representation of the elements.

Opening Reception 6-8pm.

Will Corwin will create an outdoor site-specific installation using miniature mass-produced cement panels. These panels initially will imitate architectural forms and structures, but through exposure to the elements, these structures will begin to deform and collapse, creating a series of ruins that will explore both the beauty of decay, and poke fun at the impossible idea of the architectural masterplan.

As part of a travelling series of screenings where we'll show works
that are interrogating contemporary film and video practices. we are
interested in raising a discussion about political theory and practice
of the moving image and its potential for a critical analysis of
representational practices.

The following selection of films and videos can be outlined as modes
of rehearsing and re-writing. We have commissioned these works due to
a specific interest to examine different methods of appropriating
existing found material and certain practices, which question
ideological certainty in representations, in their effects and means
of production. An awareness for genderspecific
and post-colonial power relations is inherent in these works.

A Celebration of Spirituality, Queerness, and Revolutionary Consciousness

“Hosted by musical metaphysicist Dingles and the eminent Tranimals Alaska Thunderfuck and Bizzy, with guest performers PeeWee Nyob, Davi Cohen, Liam Barnes, and Rommie Ampil, Chakra Cabaret pays homage and contributes to the radical queer arts community, continuing expressions of honesty and vulnerability that are often laid under labels of “Art,” “sexual freedom,” and other ideological, aesthetic, and social stances that mask and add layers of disconnection and posturing between our clans and tribes.”
DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
Queer expression is evolving. In the 21^st century, it seems to become more important that we consider how we identify and what our attachments are in ourselves and to others, familiar and stranger alike. Queer spirituality—a self-collected and individual collections and experiences of myths, symbols, and adoptions of the world’s many spiritual-metaphysical-philosophical traditions for creative expression over many millennia and many cultural paths—is another equally important theme. Individual and communal experiences that bond sisters and brothers in this time of paradigm shifts of many dimensions and worldly uncertainties, we believe, are vitally important.

This performance, hosted by musical metaphysicist Dingles and to the eminent Tranimals Alaska Thunderfuck and Bizzy, pays homage and contributes to the radical queer arts community, continuing expressions of honesty and vulnerability that are often laid under labels of “Art,” “sexual freedom,” and other ideological, aesthetic, and social stances that mask and add layers of disconnection and posturing between our clans and tribes. While “Performativity,” “Camp,” and other importantly queer manners of social interaction should be prized as traditions that have made powerful contributions to queers and others beyond our community, it is important that we regularly allow ourselves to become vulnerable, laugh lovingly at our foibles and fuck-ups, and cultivate bonds that last in times of hardship, and offer the needed support that will allow us to flourish through many difficult changes in how we will best related to one another.

The seven chakras act as our overarching metaphor, for it covers major dimensions and rites of human and supra-human experience. These explorations are at times overtly self-critical, while the greater experience of the evening is even more overtly affirmative. With each “Color,” we utilize multiple modes of interaction between performers and audience members where all are challenged to consider how metaphors and aspects of each chakra play various roles in lives and encourage us to take hold of benevolent spiritualities as powerful tools of change.

Some of the important issues confronted in the various charkas are:
RED: Community, support, ideas of “family,” communal materialism
ORANGE: Sensual pleasure, emotions, interpersonal relationships, revenge
YELLOW: Individual confidence, power, materialism, image and body
GREEN: Vulnerability. unconditional Love, altruism, lessoning suffering
BLUE: Voice, Integrity, Personal Truths, Self-Expression, Language
VIOLET: Intellect, rationality, intuition; Mind as Control Center or Receiver?
WHITE: Embracing spirituality, integration, wisdom, Eternity, Bliss

2nd: Splace Possiblity
In the afternoon (from 3-5pm)
Bring a cork for a small boat making activity organized by Dillon de Give!
Splace Possiblity is a workshop that invites participants to build a small boat with a cork, and share the story of drinking associated with it. This is not an instructional class, just a place to sit down and make a small boat however you like with your cork and natural materials from the garden. Participants to the building action are invited to take a boat home as a souvenir, but must agree to sail it down a street gutter in a New York rainstorm, and document the experience in some way. The winner of best boat design will get a small prize.
About the Artist:
Dillon de Give creates site-specific situations, and elementary school style performances. His work has been shown recently at Fritz Haeg’s Dome Colony X at X-Initiative and chashama, also at the Center for Contemporary Art Santa Fe, Select Media Chicago, and various NYC parks. Dillon lives in Brooklyn, studied film at Northwestern University and grew up in New Mexico.

Sandra Sprecher, Kristin Alexander, Mindy Levokove,

Michael Sheridan, Robert Todd, and William Hohauser.

Curated by Sandra Sprecher.

2 -10 pm.- Video Installation Viewing.

8pm.- Screening.

Starting at 2:00 there will be new video sculptures by Sandra Sprecher

in the garden. The video sculptures are a direct response to global warming.

In conjunction with these, the Parents for Climate Protection parentsforclimateprotection@gmail.com will be having an activity for kids.

We really would love to have lots of kids and parents participate in this event.

They will be writing and decorating letters which then are sent to senators, etc. The letters are very powerful statements.

Works Dedicated to nature Inspired by Environment- ENVIRO-ART

In the spring of 2009, I gathered together a series of filmmakers who created art/installations inspired by the environment or as commentary about the vulnerability of the environment. We had 3 showings in NYC including one at the lower east side garden. My video installation, Screaming Forest was partially funded with a NYFA grant and was originally created for a premiere at The Medicine Show Theater. This Fall it was also selected to be part of “The sustainability of the Planet-Art Gone Green” Film Screening Bunker College in Boston, MA. In addition I have made some sculptures that went with the original installation. There are small video screens that are attached to metal, found objects, pipes, scraps, etc. that I will display around the garden - Sandra Sprecher.

About the artists:

Sandra Sprecher, composer, pianist, videographer, sculptor. She started out with a typical music conservatory education studying the classical repertoire and writing large and small ensemble works in a wide variety of instrumental combinations. Now, in addition to creating music and sound for the theatre, experimental film and dance, she has, in the last decade, embarked onto an additional path of making video and sculpture, creating highly original, complex, experimental installation pieces. The music is a mesmerizing, menagerie of digitally manipulated raw urban noise mixed with masterful instrumental and vocal performances. Drawing upon political and sociological issues as well as intensely personal experiences, the works tackle the world in a tightly woven stream of the abstract, environmental, and surreal. Elementals was the first of this series, focusing on greed, and lust. Building large still lives and filming them, the 2 elementals Gnomi and Nymphes were created. The Gnomi began as primal and sacred, but turned evil as they crossed into our contemporary world ultimately falling to ruin due to their obsessions. The Nymphes were both seductive and somewhat taunting. Now What... was created for multiple screen video and sound track with live keyboard sounds and narrator/singer. This piece was a somewhat surreal montage of images that depicted the creation of the earth, its transformation and man's potentially destructive intervention. The images are at times chronological and at others, confused, as though the soul survivor woke up only to see it afterwards in a muddled chaotic flashback. In the live performance the multiple video images diverge as the speed of the images accelerates. Screaming Forest is the latest multimedia installation work, complete with multiple videos, videosculpture and huge musical score accompanied by live vocals. She has been funded by NYSCA, Fromm Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, Meet the Composers, NYFA, and NYSCA. In addition, she has also worked on numerous projects as pianist, music director, composer, and sound designer for The Medicine Show Theater and sound designer for dance and experimental films. http://www.sandrasprecher.com

A lyrical filmmaker as well as a sound and visual artist, Robert Todd continually produces short works that resist categorization. In the past twelve years he has produced a large body of short-to-medium format films that have been exhibited internationally at a wide variety of venues and festivals including the Media City Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Le Rencontres Internationale, Black Maria Film Festival, Nouveau Cinema in Montreal, Cinematheque Ontario, the Harvard Film Archive, Pacific Film Archive, the Paris Biennial, Slamdance Film Festival, and others. Mindy Levokove has composed and performed vocal, electronic, and/or acoustic music pieces for theater and dance in many varied venues including The Brooklyn Museum, Tompkins Square Park and The Duke Theater. She has been a member of the bi-coastal performance group, The Amazing Landfill Gardeners of Gondwanaland for more than 12 years. She has curated and performed in Poetry and Performance Events at ABC No Rio for a number of years and at the 6th Street and Avenue B Garden for almost 20 years. She has a CD of some of her songs from before 2001, called Keys, and another CD, called CORN, to be available soon. Contact her at mlevokove@earthlink.net.

William Hohauser has been floating around the multimedia business for a while. He has owned a video production business for over 20 years where he edits and videotapes projects for many clients. His animated visual work has been seen on the Cartoon Network and shown at various festivals such as the Frame Damage festival and the ASU Film Festival. His last animation was a finalist for the Channel 13 shorts broadcast. He has directed and shot several Jazz concerts for DVD release. Kristin Alexander is a documentary filmmaker. She studied communications and film at the University of Notre Dame and Mass College of Art. She has been a cinematographer for multiple films and video productions. Her first documentary followed 5 women surviving cancer on cape Cod, and screened in Chatham and the Woods Hole Film Festival. She has filmed and edited portraits of people around the world. Green Eco-Machine has been an official selection in the WHFF, Louisville International Festival of Film, and EcoFocus festival in Athens, Georgia.

Michael Sheridan is a filmmaker whose videosonic art and documentary work address issues of social development and the tipping point between order and chaos. Michael’s interest in these issues arise from his experiences of families falling apart and reuniting, and societies teetering on the verge of collapse or recovering from conflict and disaster. Michael’s artwork has been exhibited at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Boston Cyberarts festival and the GASP gallery in Boston. His documentary work has appeared on PBS, The Learning Channel, The Discovery Network and National Geographic TV. The National Education Media Network, The Columbia International Film and Video Festival, The United Nations Association Film Festival, and EarthVision have all awarded his work. Michael’s work is influenced by his extensive travels throughout Europe, South Asia, Africa and the Americas. In the 90’s he started traveling the world producing documentaries of hunger, poverty and community development for organizations like Oxfam, Save the Children-UK, Bread for the World and independently. He served as Senior Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia teaching and working on new films during the 2007-08 academic year. Michael has an MFA from the Mass College of Art. http://www.sheridanworks.com/

The Work: "Luminous Point"
Luminous Point is an interactive video about memory. Memory both human and artificial. Navigating per remote control, the viewers explore a digital recreation of the artist’s Lower East Side tenement apartment—a virtual wunderkammer and archive in which distant places and different times, personal biography and cultural history, fact and fiction all coexist just like in the mental space of memory. Effortlessly changing between microscopic and macroscopic dimensions, the visitors pass through a labyrinth of spaces, descend into subterranean worlds, lift off skywards like dreamers, free from the binds of gravity and linear time. Luminous Point seamlessly combines video and computer generated material, creating a new form of electronic work, a hybrid composed of elements from narrative and documentary video/film, computer game, virtual reality, and photography.

My work explores the shifting realities of everyday life, memory and dream. The method : overtly and covertly recording what‘s ephemeral and seemingly mundane. Aided by a computer and a 3D application, I mull over the various ways these snippets might possibly relate, much like a scientist or detective trying to fit the pieces of an unknown puzzle.

Lili White / House of The Gentle interprets eight hexagrams from the classic text oracle of the I Ching, or Chinese Book of Changes, thru gestural performances set in Nature, Chaco Canyon, and Shofuso, the Japanese House & Garden in Philadelphia.

Lili White performs in Nature’s stage set; her form suggests a bodily connection to a dream logic—that is no logic—no answers posited to --?--— What was the question?

The form derived from authentic movement, a technique of improvisational movement practice that allows its participants a type of free association of the body, started by Mary Starks Whitehouse in the 1950s as "movement in depth". Perception was the ultimate theme…

Regarding the East’s treatment of landscape:

“…Nature as a reflection of consciousness: eschewing traditional Western schemes of landscape as monumental & eternal…the East’s (view is) the notion of landscape as ephemeral form and infinite process, like Chinese landscapes (that) achieve a dynamism to suggest something numinous and wonderous beyond eternal form.”

The I Ching is a "reflection of the universe in miniature." Its hexagrams represent descriptions of certain states or processes, using the essences found in Nature as the basis for its descriptions. There are a total of sixty-four different yet archetypal forms of energy described. The “gentle” refers to wood or the wind, both are gentle yet penetrating powers.

Versailles in the Sky by Sabine Mohr is a luminous painting of an aerial plan of Versailles, the palace estate of Louis the Fourteenth. When flashed with a light source the painting will then glow in the dark. Created originally for the show LAST CALL last October at Le Petit Versailles but now finally to be exhibited this year.

Le Petit Versailles 2010 Season - Call for Proposals.

LPV was created in 1996 by Allied Productions and other neighborhood members as a GreenThumb public garden located at 346 East Houston St. @ Avenue C in the East Village. It is volunteer based and is dedicated to preserving the vitality of NYC greenspace through the arts, broadening & enriching the general public with performances, screenings, workshops and similar activities.

We present 6 months of public events May- November with music & film series, visual art exhibitions and workshops. We are looking for unusual ideas that address the environment, social and progressive issues and the site specific nature of the garden itself. Temporary installations, performances, films, workshops in any discipline are desired. Exhibitions must include works that can withstand the rigors of nature.

We are also on the list of available sites for the community service proponent of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Program. Target audiences and communities include queer, people of color, gardeners, local neighborhood residents, artists and activists from around the world.

Abby Donovan is interested in the urgency and absurdity of what she thinks of as necessarily temporary and site-specific constructions of meaning. The probable pause of materiality. Hery practice includes actions, performances, and material constructions. Currently teaching at the University of Delaware, Donovan’s most recent projects include: upcoming in November 2009, the presentation “Transmissions from Another World: Artist Apparitions in the Age of Mobile Videocasting” as part of MOBILEFEST, Museu da Imagem e do Som, Sao Paulo, Brazil; in December 2009 the construction/performance Which I Have Made (Attempting Necromancy with Wm. Blake) at the European Ceramic Work Centre (.ekwc) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands; and in September 2009 “THESE THE HEAVENS OF MY BRAIN,” a performance in the playground as part of the 13^th Annual DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival in Brooklyn, NY.

Screening: Hunger Videos and Joern Zehe

In addition to interventions and installations of individual artists in the park itself, it will offer reports and documentation on how the artists established the cooperative FRISE eG (Sabine Mohr/Torsten Bruch), as well as a lecture on the development of artists’ self-organization in Hamburg, highlighting the WSW # 3. Information material on the many other Hamburg non-for-profit art spaces and projects from the so-called Hamburg Box will also be presented.

A film screening will show a collection of videos and movies produced by Torsten Bruch, the ABZ, Joern Zehe, Christoph Rothmeier, and other artists. [ See program notes below]

The focus of this project is the artistic exploration of the use and preservation of public space and public premises - particularly open – green - spaces in a highly developed, urban environment. The small park of Le Petit Versailles in the Lower Eastside of Manhattan, a little paradise in the midst of a highly contested and now highly valued property market, is also a symbol for the artists’ engagement against gentrification and ideally suited as a platform for this project.

Closely linked to this is the question of how non-profit-work of individual artists and artist groups can be maintained and organized in such an environment. The experiences, which the Künstlerhaus FRISE has gained in its turbulent history in Hamburg, correspond to the situation in New York on different levels and are addressed in LAST CALL.

The project Hamburg LAST CALL traces different levels of information about the circumstances of contemporary artwork and the situation of artists in the city of Hamburg /Germany in general and the specific situation of the Hamburg artist cooperative FRISE. Since FRISE/ alias Künstlerhaus Hamburg e.V. was the first so called artist house (Künstlerhaus) in Hamburg and Germany-. established in 1978, its construction and reconstruction in 2003 - gives an example and a genuine story of how an artist cooperative survived gentrification and (art) market hype. Since 1989 when Künstlerhaus, hosted the ABC NO RIO SHOW "Ten Years Seven Days" the artist collective had to leave their place, find and reconstruct another building.

In conjunction with the ABZ a video- and filmmaker organization they established FRISE in 2003. To avoid a repetition of the gentrification story and another foreseeable loss of the new place they eventually founded the FRISE eG Cooperative in 2008 and succeeded to buy the hereditary tenure of the real estate from the city for 1.4 million €. So now 40 artists have a safe place to live and work in FRISE for the next 36 years.

Three most important issues define the work of FRISE:

PRODUCTION . EXCHANGE, EXHIBITION of contemporary art - 40 artist live and work in the house ( painting, sculpture, drawing, video, experimental filmmaking a.o.), a guest studio for foreign artists was established to pursue art exchange as well as FRISE artists invite artists from all over the world to stay and work in FRISE. Since 1978 a exhibition program is realized by the FRISE artists as curators, the exhibition space is subventioned by the city.

FRISE alias Künstlerhaus Hamburg as an effective cooperation of artists had a strong impact an the cultural policy of the Hamburg city and Hamburg´s artist scene - in Hamburg now has developed an independent art scene with at least 16 to 20 independent art spaces - which have cooperated in the last two years 2007 /08 in an own festival called WSW 1 and WSW 2. The project roughly outlines this development by documents, screenings and catalogues. To present the recent video- and filmmaking activities at FRISE "Last Call" will show a video and short film program of members of ABZ and FRISE, like: Torsten Bruch, Jörn Zehe, Christoph Rothmeier.

A site specific installation for the garden "Le Petit Versailles" itself realized by Sabine Mohr, Christoph Rothmeier and Llaura Sünner will install a real utopia of Versailles en miniature in the garden.

Le Petit Versailles is a NYC public community garden in the East Village that presents a season of events including art exhibitions, music, film/video,performance, theater, workshops and community projects from May - October.
